Our first thrill came as we parked in front of the hotel--there they were: Mary and Mayahuel, framed in the window of the Greasewood Gallery! Of course, we visited them several times a day during our visit, chatting with visitors who dropped by about this work and the others in the exhibit. I had three Sunspots pieces, "Hike Big Bend" and "Complex Border issues" on adjoining walls. Around the corner were four glowing works by the wonderful Susie Monday.
Comments from viewers were very positive. Everyone wanted to know the story behind the works and enjoyed being able to get close to the quilts to look at stitching and details. The exhibit will be in place for a month; we're hoping for some sales as people return for a second or third look.
We had time to wander around Marfa visiting galleries, bookstores and historic structures. Also drove over to Alpine to see the Big Bend Museum at Sul Ross State University (beautiful rock building and fine exhibits). We ate a lot, climbed to the cupola of the courthouse to view the town from above (87 steps, which just about did us in.)
this was the first time I've been invited to display in a commercial gallery. It was truly thrilling, a happy experience altogether. Many thanks to Vicki Barge, the hotel and gallery manager, and to all the staff who were so welcoming and helpful.
