Ah, but no virus can compete with containers of paint and an empty surface. This is the big closet in the Jungle Corridor. The red figure is El Danzante with his elaborate headdress and gourd rattles. He appears in many ancient carvings in the Oaxaca area; my figure is inspired by the weavings of the Navarro sistersof Santo Tomas Jalieza who were so very hospitable during our visit. Crispina and Margarita Navarro also joined us for breakfast in Oaxaca City later in the trip and we had an animated conversation about their traditional woven images. "Some tourists ask me about the six-pointed stars," said Crispina. "They ask me if I'm Jewish! Of course I'm not Jewish. The stars are for everybody. (Las estrellas son para todos.)"
I thought Crispina had a pretty good message for Christmas. The stars are for us all. And we all hope for bountiful crops. And we appreciate good dancing.
May your new year be full of every blessing.
