I had some pale lavender organza left from an earlier project, nice and sheer and non-stretchy, just enough to back my lacy pieces. (Now I need to buy some more of that next time I'm near a good fabric store.) I put the organza aside to use later and taped the pieces to my painting table, using Lumiere to accent the formal woven pattern.
The scalloped edge is nicely held in place by the organza backing (no stretching out of shape). I think the paint brings out the elaborate design very well. I will combine this with some of the painted damask to make up a larger piece, but that's not yet ready for prime time. It got me to thinking, though--I'll bet a lot of us have these white or off-white machine lace table linens in a drawer. Maybe we even use them occasionally, perhaps draped over a colored cloth for contrast. This one was given to me by someone clearing out her mother's house, but I'm sure I have one of my own in the dining room buffet. What if I dyed and painted it and used it on the table? It would surely be more interesting--but would I cringe visibly when someone spilled spaghetti sauce on it? On the other hand, it could make a lightweight vest or jacket and it is washable. I'll have to think some more about that. |
