When I got home on Saturday, there was a call for a meeting of a new local artists coalition-- in 15 minutes. I went on over to the Elks Club and met the various artists who want to find space and develop a gallery. Lots of energy, not much experience in this sort of thing. Still, I need exposure to artists in other media, people who have successfully marketed their work, and younger artists. So I signed up and volunteered to be secretary. I suspect that the two of us who have some experience in organizing groups will have a lot to do. It would be interesting, though, to have a co-op gallery and to see how others develop. It is surprising to me that a number of people are really making a living doing art in Huntsville TX, a small town with a conservative orientation. We have a lot of public art and more coming all the time. It could become a very vital group.
Spent Friday and Saturday in The Woodlands at the Diocesan Convention, marketing stoles. Many contacts and a few people exhibiting interest in purchase, but no complete sales. I have hopes that some who picked up cards may follow up. In any case, it was a learning experience. Like many conventions, hurried lookers, a lot of comments like, "I'm a quilter, I hope you don't mind if I steal your ideas." Well. The most fun thing was attending the opening service Friday evening and seeing several of "my" stoles worn in the procession.

I would think the Art Department at SHSU would be active in the local art scene. Huntsville is such a unique college town -- I'd have thought the college itself and the students and profs would make it "liberal" like Austin.
